In September, we were very lucky to go to Wuhan to do a one-day workshop on IELTS Speaking and Writing. In our workshops for teachers, we get to hear and share lots of activities that work with teachers in China.
For the criterion of Lexical Resource there is the term 'appropriacy' – using words in appropriate ways. This concept can be a challenge for some students, but we really like the idea presented by one of the participants.
One of the participants at the Wuhan workshop told us about how he helps his students understand the idea of 'appropriacy'. This is what he does:
- He asks each student to take a piece of paper.
- Then, he asks them to draw an item of footwear, e.g. sandals, high heels, smart shoes, trainers/sneakers, etc.
- Then, he asks them to draw an item of clothing that covers the body from the waist down, e.g. a skirt, trousers/pants, shorts, jeans.
- Then, he asks the students to draw an item of clothing that covers the upper body, e.g. a shirt, a jumper, a T-shirt, a jacket, a tank top etc.
- Then, he asks his students to look at the items of clothing in groups and decide which items of clothing would be okay for a business person to wear to a formal meeting, a person going on a beach holiday, etc.
- Finally, he gets students to identify the link between the activity and the term appropriacy and what this means for using and learning a language.
Of course, this activity can also connect very well with a lesson on the topic of clothing or fashion, for example. It also connects with the article in the 'Inspired by the research' section,
Do you have ways to help your students understand items of terminology on the band descriptors? Send us your ideas as a series of steps and win an IELTS goody bag!
